Committee On Diaspora Urges Nigerians To Stop Going To Libya

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has urged Nigerians to desist from migrating to Libya, as the Libyan government has been knwon to execute black illegal immigrants.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the SSA, was prompted to make the statement after videos and pictures purportedly showing the killing of black immigrants in Libya were brought to her attention. While Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa could not verify the authenticity of the videos and photographs, she stated that "it is a known fact that Libya has been executing alleged black illegal immigrants for years."
The SSA added that on one occasion, the Committee on Diaspora in the House of Representatives in the Seventh Assembly intervened to prevent 24 Nigerians in Libya from being executed. The committee had to petition the UN, African Union, ECOWAS, and the late Muammar Gaddafi to secure their lives.
In order to prevent future executions of Nigerians, Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), together with the Nigerian embassy in Libya, has evacuated over 2000 Nigerians from Libya.
"The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora hereby appeals again to Nigerian migrants to avoid Libya, as penalty for illegal migration to Libya, when caught, is usually a death sentence," she concluded.
