EXCLUSIVE: How Ondo Community, Sabomi Celebrate Triennial Masquerade Festival -(PHOTOS)

Generally, the Egungun (or masquerade) festival is an important celebration amongst the Yoruba people, who believe that the masked figures represent the spirits of the dead who return annually to reunite with the living.

The masquerades are elaborate and possess both human and animals features. The festival is celebrated across Ondo State with music and dance.

Sabomi is a town in Ese-Odo local government area of the state.

Residents in the community all speak a local dialect, Apoi.

The Apoi language is also spoken by 9 other communities in the local government area.

Unlike most Yoruba communities, the Sabomi masquerade festival doesn't hold annually, it only happens once in three years.

At the end of every three years, the festival kicks off from 26th of December to 30th of the month.
