In furtherance of its Community Development programme, a non-governmental organization (NGO), F3Initiative on Saturday, 1 October held an environmental sanitation campaign in Gbethrome community of Badagry, Lagos State.
The F3Initiative team led by its founder, Mrs. Sukurat Adelodun and participants of the YALI Cohort 5 leadership programme moved round the Gbethrome community to sensitize residents on the need to keep their environment clean and maintain proper hygienic practices.
Mrs. Adelodun noted that the way people treat their environment will influence the quality of their wellbeing, stressing that, “it is important people adopt hygienic practices that will promote cleanliness and guarantee them a healthy living.”
She said that everybody has a role to play in ensuring a clean and sustainable environment, which according to her will prevent the spread of diseases.
The F3Initiative founder also used the opportunity to educate members of the community, particularly parents on the importance of girl-child education.
Mrs. Adelodun urged women in the community to attach importance and great value to education and also give their best to educate their children, just as she also pledged to keep contributing towards the development of the community.
Responding, the Community head, Lateef Aliu Ogungbe appreciated the F3Initiative for coming to their community. He decried the deplorable condition members of the community have been living in due to lack of basic social amenities.
Ogungbe, therefore, urged stakeholders such as corporate bodies, international organizations, the Lagos State government and other well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid by providing the community with electricity, water, health center to enable them live well.
The Community head, however, thanked the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for the Technical school established in the community, which is expected to be commissioned soon.
He also called on investors and business men to come and invest in the community to enable the inhabitants get empowered through jobs and skills that could be learnt in the process.
“We have lands that can be acquired by investors to invest in our community, we also have space that can be used to build hospitals and provide quality healthcare services for our people" he said.
Also speaking, one of the Community women, who simply gave her name as Medese, said that they value education and would love to get their children educated, but added that many of them could not afford their children’s school fees.
"My daughter just got promoted to SSS1 and when we got to the school, I was told to pay N4,500 to get her enrolled. Where do I get such money when I can hardly afford three square meals for my family?
“I don't have job or any means of livelihood, please talk to government for us, after all they said it is free education. What is free about the N4,500,” she exclaimed.
It was, however, gathered by the F3Initiative team that the recommended school fee by the State government is N1,450 as against the N4,500 charged by school authorities in the community.
In her remark, the Community women head, Alhajat Ramat Abdulmalik applauded the F3Initiative for coming to the community to educate them. She advised the women to make good use of all they learnt and always value education.
