Ebonyi education officers demand money, sex for favours – Governor Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Monday accused primary and secondary school education inspectors and secretaries in the state of demanding money and sex for favours from teachers in the state.

He made the allegation in Abakaliki during a meeting with stakeholders in the state’s education sector.
The Governor also lamented the total collapse of the education system in the state.
According to him, despite government’s best efforts to reform the sector in line with international best practices, the education inspectors and secretaries who are supposed to monitor the teachers have now become sex merchants.
“All you do is demand money and sex from teachers. The teachers have also become merchants selling clothes and other goods instead of teaching the students.
“This is the reason why you have cultism on the increase in schools because the teachers are not doing their work properly and you are not inspecting them to make sure they do their job.”
The governor, therefore, directed the deputy governor to initiate a restructuring of the sector immediately beginning with the re-posting of all education secretaries and inspectors.
“Never again will any education secretary be allowed to work in his local government of origin”, he added.
The Governor also directed the Commissioner for Education, Special Advisers on Education and other officers of government to relocate to the hinterlands and monitor the schools.
“Until the school system improves we won’t recall you, you will live there and continue to monitor the schools until we are satisfied,” Mr. Umahi said.
