Letter To Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (BABA 70) By S.A. Odunuga

You died in August 1997 but your philosophical and theoretical views still reign in the society till today. The plain-spoken and fearless 'abami eda' was a firebrand in his days using his afrobeat music to sensitise the populace through didactic lyrics.

Baba 70, Nigeria has not left the grim days contrary to what you may be thinking right now. Governance in Nigeria is now aloof with endless and ruinous politicians recycling power in Nigeria. The leaders of tomorrow in 1997 are still not leading the nation in 2016 rather they are being led by juggernauts of bygone politicians who have decided not to rule Nigeria in the context of modern democracy and 21st century public policy and governance.

The king of afrobeat, plebeians are ghettoized more rapidly and the social gap keeps widening by the day. The people are debased and deceived during electioneering campaigns. The rights of the poor are being infringed day-in-day-out. The law is in a cherubic how-do-you-do. One law for the poor and one law for the rich,is the state of jurisprudence in Nigeria as we mark your departure anniversary.

FELA
In the political arena, the AUTHORITY PEN that you avowed has power and influence than a GUN is now popular. Authority stealing is fashionable now.Authority stealing doesn't distinguish between two major political parties. It doesn't differentiate between two religions. It doesn't not discern among regions. In Nigeria of today, if a gun steals; it bags several years of imprisonment, but whenever an authority pen pilfers; it is glorified and defended by the Nigerian acquis.

There is draught of altruistic governance firebrands since you left. When they were so restive,we thought they were fighting for us. However, in a short period of time,we discovered that they were not fighting our battles but rather; their battles for survival, political hegemony and terrestrial opulence.

There are now brobdingnagian authority pens different from what you used to sing about. The authority pens are now embellished with ethnicity, religion, poverty alleviation scheme, empowerment sham and white elephant projects.

The philosophy of "no pain no gain" has beclouded the optics of the people and has acquired a wide credence among the commoners while the ruling class continue to enjoy plethora and grandeur prosperity.

May your soul continue to enjoy tranquillity yonder.....Nigerians are missing you BABA 70.
