The former prime minister of Central African Republic Faustin Archange Touadera won the Central African Republic’s presidential elections, according to the nation’s electoral body.
The elections were a second round run-off that pitted Mr. Touadera against Anicet Georges Dologuele, another former prime minister. Mr. Dologuele took the most votes in the first round. Mr. Touadera won 63% of the vote.
Mr. Dologuele accepted Mr. Touadera’s victory during a statement to the press on Saturday night.
Mr. Touadera served as prime minister Francois Bozize until he was toppled in a 2013 coup.
Many observers hope that the elections will facilitate a peace deal. Sectarian violence in the country has caused thousands of deaths and forced an estimated 500,000 people to flee the country.
